Cook County Jail Roster Overview
The official Cook County inmate records search starts with the Cook County Sheriff Individual in Custody Locator. The Cook County government also has a Locate an Inmate service page that points users to the Sheriff locator, confirming that the Sheriff tool is the county jail route. The form is free and public, but it uses Google reCAPTCHA and does not publish a roster refresh schedule in the research reviewed.
The roster is for people held in the Cook County Jail system. It is not an IDOC prison search, a BOP federal search, an ICE immigration search, a statewide warrant list, or the official court file. If a person was sentenced to state custody, search IDOC. If the case is federal, search BOP. If the person may be in immigration custody, search ICE ODLS or contact the ICE Chicago field office.
Search Cook County Inmate Records
The Sheriff locator accepts either full name or Booking ID. The Booking ID is also useful for mail, deposits, and records questions, so keep it exactly as shown when available. Do not assume that a no-result search means a person is free. They may still be in police processing, court, IDOC, BOP, ICE, another county, a hospital category, or recently discharged.
- Open the Sheriff Individual in Custody Locator search form.
- Enter full first name and full last name, or use the Booking ID field.
- When using Booking ID, remove hyphens and use digits only.
- Complete the reCAPTCHA and submit the form.
- If no match appears, call 773-674-5245, then check Clerk, IDOC, BOP, ICE, or VINELink channels as the facts require.
Cook County Roster Search Fields
The static search form does not show filters for charge, birth date, release date, arresting agency, facility, sex, or housing unit. That is important in Cook County because many people share names. When a Booking ID is known, it is the cleaner search path.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full First Name | Text | Yes for name search | Listed under Individual in Custody Name. |
| Full Last Name | Text | Yes for name search | Use the full last name. |
| Booking ID | Text | Yes for booking search | Do not use a hyphen. Example format is digits only. |
| Google reCAPTCHA | Widget | Yes | Required before form submission. |

The image confirms the two search paths: full name or Booking ID. The surrounding page also links to discharge, FAQ, rules, registration, and login pages.
Cook County Inmate Profile Fields
Cook County profile details must be described with care. The public search form and related Sheriff pages confirm several identifiers, but automated research could not inspect a full current profile because of reCAPTCHA. The Sheriff FAQ indicates the result/profile area includes an individual's photo and a register-online link for visitation. Housing details are supported by visitation pages, which explain division and living-unit code formats.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | Full name is used for searching; profile display was not fully verified. |
| Booking ID | Search identifier also needed for mail and deposits. |
| Photo | FAQ confirms a photo area tied to visitation registration. |
| Housing location | Division and tier/living-unit codes such as DIV2 or DIV08 formats. |
| Charges, bond, court dates | Not verified on the current public profile. Use Clerk and AVN channels. |
| Redactions or limits | reCAPTCHA and access controls limit automated profile review. |
Cook County Jail Records Phone Channels
The automated help line at 773-674-5245 is a key fallback. Sheriff materials say it routes callers in English or Spanish for individual search or bond, electronic monitoring, visitation, trust account, medical or mental-health condition information, property, commissary and refunds, mailroom, individual-in-custody records, and divisional supervisor questions. Customer service at 773-674-1945 is listed as seven days a week, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Cook County Jail Visitation Records
Visitation depends on custody status, housing location, approval, and the current Sheriff scheduling process. The Sheriff visitation page says the old divisional visiting schedule is not being followed because of modified procedures, so historical division schedules should not be treated as current appointment times. Current family video visits use Microsoft Teams, and in-person visits are scheduled through the Sheriff visit scheduler or visitor workflow.
| Channel | Cook County Detail |
|---|---|
| Housing lookup | Use the locator or call 773-674-5245 before scheduling. |
| Visitor Information Center | 773-674-8225 or 773-674-8194 in visitation materials. |
| Video visits | Family video visits use Microsoft Teams after approval. |
| In-person scheduling | Use the Cook County visit scheduler and confirm current rules. |
Cook County Booking Numbers
Booking number is more than a search key. The Sheriff mail FAQ says mail should include the person's name and booking number, followed by 2700 S. California Ave., Chicago, IL 60608. The trust account page says online and phone deposits need the exact name spelling and Booking Number as shown on the Sheriff site. If the booking number is not known, use the locator or the help line before sending mail or money.
| Service | Official Detail |
|---|---|
| Name, Booking Number, 2700 S. California Ave., Chicago, IL 60608. | |
| Commissary limit | Up to $100 per week in clothing, supplies, or food items. |
| Deposit vendors | Western Union, MoneyGram, JailATM, USPS, and lobby kiosks. |
| Phone provider | GTL/ViaPath/ConnectNetwork, with published local and interstate rates of $0.05 per minute. |
Cook County Booking Records Requests
If a booking record is not visible online, use the Sheriff FOIA and subpoena request page. The Sheriff accepts online requests through GovQA. Research also documented mail to the Sheriff's Freedom of Information Officer at the Richard J. Daley Center and an in-person route through the Civil Process Division. FOIA is for Sheriff booking and jail records, not routine court case files.
For court charges, next court dates, and certified dispositions, use the Clerk. Courts are not handled like normal executive-branch FOIA requests. Certified dispositions require defendant name, date of birth, and date of arrest, while next-court-date lookup can require name, aliases, date of birth, year of arrest, and charges.
Cook County Inmate Records Elsewhere
Cook County records often split after the first arrest stage. IDOC profiles can show front and side photos, parent institution, status, physical profile, projected parole, projected discharge, and sentencing details. BOP locator results show federal register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location. ICE ODLS searches by A-number or by name, country of birth, and birth date. VINELink is useful when the goal is notification rather than a one-time lookup.
Custody distinction: Cook County Jail is usually pretrial or county custody. IDOC is sentenced state custody. BOP is federal custody. ICE ODLS is civil immigration custody.
Cook County Search Problems
A person may not appear in Cook County inmate records for several legitimate reasons. Newly arrested people may still be in police processing or waiting for court paperwork. A person who was sentenced may have moved to IDOC custody. A federal defendant may be in MCC Chicago or another BOP or contract facility. An immigration custody question may belong in ICE ODLS. A person with a court date question may need the Clerk rather than the Sheriff.
Name searches can also fail because the Sheriff locator requires a full first and full last name. Hyphens or punctuation in a Booking ID can cause a search problem because the form instruction says not to use hyphens. When names are common, gather the date of birth, year of arrest, charges, and any case number before calling the Clerk or jail line.
Cook County Records Glossary
Cook County uses several custody terms that sound similar but point to different systems. A few plain-language definitions help keep jail, court, state, and federal records separate.
- Booking ID
- The Cook County jail identifier used for locator search, mail, and deposits.
- Individual in custody
- The current Sheriff and Illinois term for a person held in jail or prison custody.
- Detainer
- A notice or request from another authority that can affect release.
- Mittimus
- A court commitment document used when a sentence sends a person to custody.
- Disposition
- The final court outcome for a charge or case.
Cook County Custody Notifications
VINELink and Cook County automated victim notification are useful when a person needs status changes instead of a one-time roster lookup. Research found Illinois VINELink and Cook County State's Attorney AVN material for custody status, release notification, upcoming court dates, number of charges, bond-court release status, and mandatory bond conditions. These systems do not replace the Sheriff roster or Clerk case file, but they can alert registered users when a custody or court event changes.
Cook County Records Boundary
The Sheriff jail roster is strongest for current custody. The Clerk is stronger for charges, case status, and certified outcomes. Keeping that boundary clear prevents the most common Cook County inmate records mistake.
